HISTORY NUVOLARI - MARCH

March: The Month of Tazio Nuvolari’s International Triumphs

By Fabio Castagna, Head of Digital Bank, in collaboration with Giuseppe Pottocar, Director of the Tazio Nuvolari Museum

For Tazio Nuvolari, March was never just another month. It was the month of firsts, of brilliant intuitions in the pouring rain, of victories built on courage and tactical intelligence. It was the month in which a legend was born, and in which that legend was forged on the roads and circuits of Europe and North Africa.

It all began on March 20, 1921, at the First Coppa Veronese di Regolarità. It was his first car race. At the wheel of an Ansaldo, the “home” car, Nuvolari did more than simply take part: at the time controls, he had the officials synchronize their stopwatches with his own. He was the benchmark. He was the time. With an overall victory, he inaugurated a career that would prove unparalleled.

In the years that followed, March became the stage for memorable feats. In 1928, at the Circuito Automobilistico del Pozzo in Verona, under relentless bad weather, he devised a solution as simple as it was decisive: he fitted a protective screen against the mud and brought his mechanic along to clean it during slow sections. A small detail that made all the difference. While his rivals struggled, the driver from Mantua raced with composure and claimed victory.

Then, in 1933, at the Grand Prix de Tunisi, under driving rain that prevented any record-breaking times, Nuvolari dominated without needing to overpush, alternating the lead with Borzacchini and finishing in triumph. It was not always about attacking relentlessly—his race intelligence was enough.

From 1921 to 1933, in the month of March alone, Nuvolari competed in 11 races (4 on motorcycles and 7 in cars), achieving 12 podium finishes and 5 victories, including the legendary wins at the IV Gran Premio di Tripoli and the V Grand Prix de Tunisi. Figures that speak louder than any adjective, because Nuvolari was not merely a driver—he was a myth.
